Music is such a huge part of my life. I’ve been making mixtapes and soundtracks since I figured out how. And my writing is heavily influenced by music. Most of the stories I write start with a song as inspiration. The main characters come from me hearing a song and thinking about a person moving through the feelings and concept of the lyrics.
When I started writing Chasing Stars, Foo Fighters had come out with their cover of Prince’s “Darling Nikki.” I couldn’t get Nikki out of my head. She was the most sexually liberated woman I had heard about that far in my life and I loved that there was no slut-shaming or criticism of Nikki in the song. So I started writing about Nikki.
Ares came from a dream I had that my best friend at the time had a hot twin brother. But his character was influenced by Kings of Leon and their album Youth and Young Manhood. Ares is a lot of “the strong silent type.” He has a hard time telling Nikki exactly how he feels. Sometimes he even tells her what he’s thinking through song lyrics and Nikki and I both think that’s super adorable but kind of dorky.
Here’s a short list of the music I was listening to that influenced and inspired Chasing Stars:
· “Darling Nikki” by Prince as performed by Foo Fighters
· “Stay” by Rihanna
· “Clumsy” by Fergie
· “Buttons” by Pussycat Dolls
· “Latch” and “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith
· “Doses and Mimosas” by Cherub
· Goodies album Ciara
· Youth and Young Manhood album Kings of Leon
· Forty Licks album Rolling Stones
